Elegance in Architecture,
first published in Le Tour Sutton, May 2011.
Have you ever had an architectural revelation -- the experience of
being in a place whose design is so powerful and uplifting that the
sight, sound and even smell seem to transport you back to the time
and state of mind of the designer, leaving the space forever etched
in your memory? I will never forget the granite walls of the King's
Chamber deep within the Great Pyramid of Cheops, or the light streaming
through the oculus of the ancient Roman Pantheon. Three other memorable
spaces come to mind, remarkable for their supremely satisfying architectural
elegance, that rare condition in which all aspects of the
design of a space have been artfully and authoritatively resolved.

The Search for Harmony in Architecture,
first published in Le Tour Sutton, November 2010.
Let's travel back in time 2,500 years to the Greek island of Samos.
A mathematician is investigating musical intervals and harmonics
by tuning a single-string instrument, the monochord. He discovers
that if the string length is reduced by half, its pitch is exactly
one octave higher. Certain ratios such as 2:3 and 3:4 produce pleasing
sounds, others create irritating disharmony. Pythagoras (570 - 495 BCE) had discovered
the mathematics of consonance and dissonance, the foundation of musical harmony...
Ever since that brilliant insight, Pythagoras and others
speculated on the existence of a similar mathematical
basis for harmony, proportion and beauty in art and architecture...
...In the late 1870s, with the railroad coming to Frelighsburg,
the visionary Mayor Joseph Landsberg decided
to build what would be for a time
the finest imported goods store in eastern Canada.
The masons laid up the thick brick walls using
a foolproof geometry worthy of the Greeks--the building
was 80 by 60 feet in plan, forming a perfect 3/4/5 triangle with a
convenient 100 foot hypotenuse. Perhaps more surprisingly, the main
facade also measures 60 feet to the top of the cupola. This sturdy tribute to Pythagoras
still sits proudly on rue Principale!

Five Architectural Gifts That Keep On Giving,
first published in Le Tour Sutton, Fall, 2009.
"We shape our spaces; thereafter they shape us..." Winston Churchill's famous maxim comes to
mind when pondering this season's theme of "munificence." Let's focus on its positive implications
by contemplating the potential for generosity, bounty and inspiration to spill into our daily lives
based on the decisions we make as we shape our home designs. Think of them as five architectural
gifts that keep on giving...

maisons.

The Essential Abode,
first published in
Le Tour Sutton, Summer, 2009.
In the hyperbole of the recent boom, the corporate media defined the ideal
home as a grandiose "McMansion," a commodity to be "flipped" for quick profit,
and a personal ATM for extracting home-equity cash...
Most Townshippers never bought into that myth, but now, like everyone else,
they are planning their renovation and new construction projects with greater
attention to the fundamentals of residential design, construction and economics.
If we can discern a trend, it is a renewed quest for what could be called the Essential Abode...

Frelighsburg, Quebec –
Galerie DESIGN, a new
exhibit space dedicated to exploring the design process, opens Saturday,
August 26th in Frelighsburg. Founded by architect Eden Muir, Galerie DESIGN
will celebrate creative thinking, innovative planning and graphical
problem-solving, whether recorded on paper or digitally.
In Galerie DESIGN's inaugural exhibition, entitled SCALE, an
artist and an architect approach the issue of scale from very
different angles. Artist
Bernice Sorge creates original prints
using plants and leaves, recording astonishing objects from nature
at full scale. Architect Eden Muir
presents several recent projects, using drawings, photos
and scale models to document the design process, while exploring
issues related to scale such as perception of space, proportion,
and the human body as the fundamental unit of architectural scale.

site d'Eden Greig Muir.
